Content Description

The Metzler family collection is a gift from the siblings Robert (“Bob”) and Rosemary Metzler, authorized posthumously by a lawyer for their personal estate(s). The siblings, who had no heirs, left their family home and ranch land to the city of Castle Rock, to be conserved as open space. Historical materials collected from the house to be preserved at the library include: books, cookbooks, magazines and other publications, personal papers, photographs, business records pertaining to the Hereford cattle and dairy ranch operations, land development plans, correspondence, ephemera, and manuscripts. / / / Bob and Rosemary were 3rd-generation Coloradans and had deep roots in Douglas County. The contents of this collection pertain to family history going back over 100 years. Raised on a working ranch, both siblings became professional educators as adults and donated their wealth to a number of charitable organizations related to education. Rosemary was a high school English teacher for over 30 years, and authored a series of children's books. Bob was a school district superintendent who spent the later part of his life as a resident of Idaho Springs (in Clear Creek County), but much of the collection material here is his. A third person, who resided at the ranch home in Castle Rock as Rosemary's companion for many decades, was Gaynel (Gay) Lankenau. She was a music teacher, originally from Indiana, and her personal material is also present.
