Allan J. Koch Cherokee Ranch Science Institute collection, 2010-2019
Scope and Content
This collection documents the activities of the Cherokee Ranch Science Institute (CRSI), which conducts research and provides science-related educational programming at the Cherokee Ranch and Castle Foundation in Sedalia, Colorado. The Institute was founded in 2013 by retired geologist Dr. Allan J. Koch, who donated these materials shortly before he passed away in 2019. This is a curated collection of CRSI materials intended for public use, containing no archival records of the Institute. The collection consists entirely of born-digital items, including presentations, abstracts, maps, and research papers about the geology, archaeology, and history of the region around Cherokee Ranch in Douglas County.

Biographical Note
Allan J. Koch (1943-2019), better known as “Al,” grew up in Iowa where he was a star basketball player and student athlete at Iowa State University. He earned his Ph.D. in geology from the University of Washington in 1970 and went on to have a 30-year career in the petroleum industry, working in exploration and research at locations across the United States and internationally. Koch retired to Castle Pines in 2000, not far from the historic Cherokee Castle and its 3400 acres of protected wildlife sanctuary. Koch first became involved with the Cherokee Ranch and Castle Foundation in 2003 as a volunteer. He helped create the Cherokee Ranch Science Institute in 2013 and served as its first director.

Arrangement
The collection is arranged in four series in alphabetical order. The titles of Series II, III, and IV were supplied by the donor and correspond to the different areas of scientific research conducted by the Cherokee Ranch Science. Series I was added by the processing archivist to contain one document not included in the original digital file structure, which provides a general overview of the Institute.
