Scope and Contents

This collection documents the Doepke family activities in Douglas County between 1868 and 1971. The materials describe Frederick Doepke and his children's social activities, work environment and community activities. Correspondence reflects personal concerns, social activities and current events affecting the family. The daily routine of ranch life is found in records of animal purchases, brand certificates and sales receipts. Books, poetry, photographs and other printed materials refer to leisure time and how it was celebrated.

Biographical / Historical

February 3, 1838 - Frederick A. and Charles F. Doepke born in Germany.

1853 - Frederick immigrated to the United States.

November 11, 1854 - Anna M. Pechtl [Doepke] born in Tyrol, Austria.

1858 - Anna immigrated to the United States.

1858 - Frederick (from his diary) living in Leavenworth in the Kansas Territory.

1858 - c. 1876 - Anna lived near Rock Falls, Illinois.

1868, 1870, 1873 - Frederick and his brother, Charles F. Doepke, purchased land in Douglas County.

December 27, 1876 - Frederick A. Doepke and Anna M. Pechtl were married.

Spring of 1877 - Frederick and Anna Doepke moved to Lake Gulch, Douglas County, CO.

June 3, 1878 - Helen Josephine, "Josie", first child of Anna and Frederick was born.

1880 - Louis, second child of Anna and Frederick was born and died. He was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, Douglas County, CO.

August 14, 1881 - William F., "Willie", "Bill", third child of Anna and Frederick was born.

1882 and 1883 - Frederick and his brother, Charles F., purchased land in Douglas County.

December 1884 - Frank, fourth child of Anna and Frederick was born.

1888 - Charles G., fifth child of Anna and Frederick was born.

April 21, 1895 - Charles F. Doepke died and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, CO.

c.1904-1910 - William lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

October 26, 1906 - Frederick A. Doepke died and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, CO.

1914 - William received a creamery license. He sold milk to the Frink Creamery of Denver.

July 19, 1929 - Anna M. Doepke died and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, CO.

March 18, 1956 - Helen Josephine died and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, CO. (She never married.)

1957 - Frank died and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, CO.

1958 - Charles G. died and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, CO.

March 10, 1971 - William died and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, CO. (He never married.)

Collection is arranged chronologically within subject headings.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

These materials were found on the Ehmann Ranch (formerly the Doepke Ranch), in Douglas County, Colorado. They were in the custody of the Douglas County Historical Society until they disbanded and donated their materials to the Local History Collection of the Douglas Public Library District (now Douglas County Libraries).
